Sharing Culture MK is the first step towards delivering the Creative and Cultured City, one of the six key projects that was identified in the MK Futures 2050 Commission Report (July 2016) as integral to the future planning and strategy for Milton Keynes. Following the adoption of the Report by Milton Keynes Council, the Culture Team has been asked to lead on this project.
So far, the Culture Team has identified the three ‘programmes’ that will deliver the Report’s recommendations:
- Milestones City Programme: Building on the 2017 50th birthday year, this programme will develop and deliver an exciting City Cultural Programme each year, and bid as Host City for international event opportunities, to deliver cultural step-change. In 2018, our collaborative programme will be Sharing Culture as part of a wider European Year of Cultural Heritage;
- Design City Programme: Celebrating, exploiting and regaining Milton Keynes’ Urban Design USP as a designed city, through new ‘city making’ projects, commencing with an International Festival of Creative Urban Living in 2019;
- Infrastructure Programme: This programme will develop and deliver enhanced venues (place) and skills development (people) so that we have the assets and resources required to drive forward cultural step-change and above all benefiting the city, its people and our identity as a place.
This work is aligned with a new Creative and Cultural Strategy for the city, which will come into being in April 2018 and will be implemented through a ten-year 2018 – 2027 Delivery Plan Framework.
